Here Is My Single, Au Revoir until 2011

Hello all of you wonderful, wonderful people.

So, that was 2010 for the Leigh Mary Stokes parade.

Everyone at Camp Leigh would like to say a massive thank you to all of you who have shown your support throughout this past year: and WHAT a year it has been.

We’ve played some amazing venues, met some amazing people and had generally an awesome awesome time.

I’m quite sad that it’s over, actually!

A few Thank You’s are in order.

First and foremost thank you to my wonderful boys, Kevvy, James and Chris for all of their hard work and for putting up with me this year. Especially in the van when I was squinnying that I needed the toilet.

Secondly to Lee Taylor at Select Booking Agency for getting me some wonderful gigs and not giving up on me yet!

Thanks to everyone at Manilla PR and One Above Records for everything they have achieved in my name this year.

Last, but my no means least, in fact, possibly MOST importantly, thank you to you, if you are reading this.

Perfect

Hello Ladies, Gentlemen, Boys and Girls.

Today I am going to be talking to you about self image. It’s rare for me to ever take time off from being sarcastic to talk about something seriously, but here we go.

My single is out on November 15^th – “Perfect”. The song is fairly self explanatory and I don’t want to go into a big heartfelt speech where I end up getting emotional and spending the rest of the afternoon trying to calm down, but it’s an important issue to me that I don’t feel like I can skim over.

It doesn’t matter what you look like: it’s what’s inside you that matters.

People used to say this to me all the time when I was younger and I used to think it was a load of rubbish and scoff at it. The thing is, as I’ve gotten older I’ve realised it is true.

People LIKE me. Lord knows why! I’m sarcastic, lazy, confusing, I THINK I’m funny... but people like me. People enjoy my company and I enjoy theirs. I laugh a LOT. I’ve already got wrinkly smile lines on my face and I regularly find myself doubled up in pain through laughing so hard. My life is excellent, despite not being what the media says is good-looking.

When I was younger, suffice to say that I had a few low points and I did feel bad about the way I looked. I have yoyo-d from thin to fat for years. The difference is that now, if I decide to lose weight it’s because I want to. Not because I feel I should do to fit in.

In “Perfect” I say “If I say I’m okay as I am, I’m okay”. The point of the song is that thin, fat, blonde, red, brunette... It doesn’t matter what you look like. You shouldn’t judge people on appearance. If I were to judge everyone on appearance as the media perceives I would probably have never met some of the most amazing people in my life.

I wrote the song in a moment of self-doubt, bizarrely. I looked at my squeeze at the time and wondered why on earth he was with me.

“Wish that I could see the world through your eyes, see what you see in me. I know I’m not all that you deserve, according to the magazines”.

He was a catch and I felt like I wasn’t. I’d seen old friends and then heard their bitchy remarks about me. I sat there all ready to write a song about how I was not good enough, when I realised that actually, I was. I was entirely good enough, because it doesn’t matter about looks. I don’t care if people think I’m hideous.

If Kate Moss is happy in herself being slim, then good for her: If she’s miserable then more fool her. It’s okay to be fat and happy. It’s okay to be thin and happy. It shouldn’t affect the way that people look at me.

The music industry is so self indulgent already that I doubt it will ever change, but if I can make at least ONE of my followers or friends stop fretting about their weight or their nose or their hair then I feel like I have achieved something.

The young girls who are my fans on facebook and twitter terrify me with their low self-esteem and worrying status’s about not eating. STOP IT.

I quote whoever writes Christina Aguilera’s songs for her when I say “you are beautiful no matter what they say”.

Don’t let people bring you down. Be proud of who you are and what you have achieved, whatever that may be. Be happy in your skin, let people in and try to see the best in people. I try to see the best in everyone and it frustrates me that some small-minded people do not.

Sum up of Mini-Tour/ I Love You Ed Macfarlane

Hello Everyone,

It’s been a while but I thought I would do a blog about everything that’s happened in the last mega busy month.

So to start we played Southsea Fest, it was awesome. Saw The Ruskins’ bandjack down Albert Road – definite highlight.

I met them as well and I am particularly fond of them so it was nice. Generally we just had an excellent day. Thanks for everyone who crammed in for my set, it was boiling hot but we LOVED it.

We played The Soundhouse in Leicester. Leicester appears to be a lovely place, due to some unfortunate Prof Green related incidents the gig wasn’t exactly heaving, but it was good fun.

We played Esquires in Bedford. I really enjoyed this gig. The support bands were the Jacobines (sounded a bit like The Blockheads, very good) and Amy and The Integrals. Both bands were excellent. I was really impressed by Amy Leeder. Beautifully crafted songs and she was lovely as well! We had an amazing night, despite being really full of curry. My favourite bit was when I went to the toilet and there was a girl on her mobile phone talking to her friend going “come to Esquires, there’s this girl playing called Leigh Stokes, apparently she’s alright”. Amazing. I was stood right next to her. And in the men’s urinals they had posters of my face with my mouth open just above them. Target practise on my face wasn’t EXACTLY what I had in mind, actually. All good fun.

We then played The Watershed in Wimbledon with the lovely Who is James Page, and The James Lewis Band. The boys decided to ditch me at the service station on the way there and it was raining so I ran after the van and got totally soaked. Cheers guys. I then grumped for a bit until someone bought me a Nando’s at which point I felt like I shouldn’t complain, really.

The London Imperial College Freshers Ball was AWESOME, it has to be said. It was us alongside Beatbullyz, Alex Gardner and Huw Stephens.

I love Huw Stephens, I met him and turned into a total fanboy but he seemed lovely and I hope it wasn’t the only chance I’ll ever have of meeting him, because I think I talked rubbish at him for about 15 minutes. Never mind.

Beatbullyz were awesome. Great set, great boys. Big love our end to Bozo, Disco, Bully, Philonious Funk and the Minotaur ;) At one point we were all stood in the alley between London Imperial College and Albert Hall and it just turned out to be an excellent evening. Who Is James Page even popped along with some friends for the night and some of our Portsmouth Crony’s came along for the ride. Really friendly evening.

Our set was good fun and we played “Perfect” for the first time in a while which was really enjoyable. PLUS lots of people bought me drinks, and our rider was awesome. Loved it, mostly.

Next up we played Brixton Hootenanny’s. Interesting fact about Hootenanny’s: it’s awesome. The venue itself is a marvel, it’s got a hostel above it and there’s room for bands to crash. The beer was cheap (and some of it free!) there was a Rastafarian called Cecil making Jerk Chicken and the punters were all up for a good time.

Just before we went onstage there seemed to be a few people there but by the time we finished it was packed. Really good fun. It was nice to have some time to chill out with the boys, as one of them is usually driving but as we stayed we had an excellent night. We met some CHARACTERS. It really was an excellent evening.

Our room was in the basement and there were bunk beds and loads of mattress’s and duvets. Kevvy went to bed early at about half 2. When we eventually stumbled to bed (yes i mean stumbled, I even ripped my leggings falling down some steps that I could have SWORN were not that far apart) we obviously threw a mattress on top of Kevvy. He didn’t really seem to notice.

Chris then put a mattress on top of James and jumped up and down on him resulting in snapped glasses. The next day we went to the opticians and got him some replacement ones but It was fairly amusing for a while.

I also saw a dog playing with a balloon. I know my manager will wish I didn’t write it but it was honestly one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. So there.

Another update for anyone who read my last blog is that SOMEHOW i've realised that there is a newcomer to my marriage requests list that I really ought to have put in but didn't because i'm a fool.

Now, anyone who knows me from Adam knows that this should have been the love of my life:

So when I discovered what this beautiful man looked like I put him straight to number one. I love his voice, I love his music, I just didn't realise he's my future husband. Some have called him a Young Mick Jagger.

Dear Ed Macfarlane: Marry Me!

Cardiff 10 Feet Tall next and it was nice to see lots of faces I’ve not seen in a while. Most of my friends left for Cardiff Uni as did James’s so they all came along and supported. Big up to the Pompey Massive ;)

All we’ve got left to do now is Coventry – the Kasbah on November 12^th then we’re done for the year!

Q+A plus who I fancy...

Hello Fantastic Fans!

Summer is over! (boooo) i'm digging out my winter warmers and desperately trying to buy a onesie (!) in order to avoid the cold. I have had several different bouts of flu over the summer and whilst typing this i'm battling with a runny nose and an almighty cough which won't do one, despite me telling it to every half hour or so.

The year has gone so incredibly fast, it feels like i've not had a chance to stop and go "so now what's happening?" but I guess it's a good thing. As part of my plan to get more organised I have included a list of the celebrities I wish to marry, it's so hard to decide who I like best, and having already written "I Want To Marry tom Vek" I feel I should make it clear there are others.. you know.. in case they're reading... This isn't so much organisation as it is procrastination, but it's fun either way.

Moving swiflty on I have been pouring through your questions all day - I must say I was shocked by the large amount of replies I recieved when I tweeted I was doing a Q+A session. Thank to everyone who entered a question, here goes:

1. Have you seen "Bolt" yet?
No, no I still haven't. I've heard it's excellent ;)

2. Tell me why, you don't like Mondays?
Aha. Come on Serious Questions now please.

3.What's your favourite biscuit?
Fox's creams. You know the round ones with the cream in the middle? either that or just a milk choc digestive. mmmm.

4.Earl Grey or Lady Grey? With/Without Milk?
Earl Grey, No Milk but a slice of Lemon. Done. mmm.

5. what song out of the set you generally do now can you see yourself playing in 20 years time?
Um. I honestly don't know. Probably "I Wanna Marry Tom Vek" can't see it ever dying!

6. If you could collaborate with anybody on the portsmouth music scene who would it be?
This is a difficult question, because ultimately I LOVE lots of Portsmouth bands. I'd say Luke Ferre but I feel it would be a bit obvious... Oh no, it would DEFINITELY be Oliver snook of Ornament Bird fame...yes. (Secretly it's KillKasper but I think it might be rubbish!)

7. If you were going travelling and you were only allowed 5 songs on your Mp3 player, what would they be?
This is triiiicky!
Buut. I think essentially i'd go for the songs which reminded me of home. So.

8. What's your fave song?
I think this might be too difficult to answer. Maybe "Something" by The Beatles. Or no! I know. "Recycled Air" by The Postal Service. In Fact that should be in the previous question!

9. Do you think that there is pressure for girl singers to look the part?
Firstly, Ellie, I LOVE this question. And I do think that, but I also think that truth will out in that some celebrities i've seen on TV being interviewed LOOK fantastic, but they come across as boring. Unconfident even. It's all about being happy with who you are. When i'm on stage, i'm happy so I don't feel the pressure as much, when I come offstage or I see photos I think "oh I could do with losing weight" then someone offers me a sandwich. (I joke but honestly, i'm not promoting being UNHEALTHY, I just think it's down to personal choice, and I shan't be bullied into being a size zero, just because that's what everyone thinks I should look like!)

10. Where do you buy the dresses you wear onstage?
Honestly? Primark. Apart from one which is some designer or another, the rest I get in Primark. Cheap and Cheerful I suppose, and their sizes don't vary as much as other high street shops. A 16 is always a 16. I do LOVE dollydagger though.

11. If you could be any other celebrity, who would you be?
My first thought was Lady Gaga, because she's just incredible. Then I thought Lily Allen, because she's awesome. But honestly I think i'd have to say Dave Grohl. A day in the life of an absolute icon? I think so.

12. what's the best gig you've ever done?
There's a lot. The Big Bash was pretty special, but I also loved my hometown show with Luke Ferre and James Tippins after my first ever tour. It felt like a reward, if that makes sense. I also really enjoyed Liverpool Sound City this year with Eliza Doolittle, it was an exciting day.

13. Have you ever had singing lessons?
I had a couple of sessions just before I took my GCSE's where I sang through my final piece over and over with my music teacher (incidentally it was "When she loved me" from the Toy Story 2 soundtrack) but other than that no.

14. What make guitar do you play?
It's a beautiful little Yammy (Yamaha) and she's called Polly and i LOVE her.

15. When you write songs do you write the music first or the words?
Both. It depends. If i'm really bursting to say something then lyrics first. I remember writing "Lucky" on reciept paper when I was working on the tills in the Co-Op. I just HAD to get it out. Other times i'll have some nice chord progression and write to it!

16. Who's your favourite Beatle?
George Harrison.

17. Are you team Rocker or Mod?
Neither, fortunately I never had to choose. One of the only plus sides of being born after everything good happened.

18. What drugs is "Little Yellow" talking about?
None, Wayne. As I have explained many times, it's about the metaphorical addiction everyone has. May it be a person, a drug, alcohol, sandwiches, cleaning... Everyone has something that they do or don't do that they wish they didn't. Maybe a person they wish would leave them alone but crave attention from, or an addiction they can't quite kick, and perhaps don't want to. It's about wishing for the Little Yellow Pill in your life to leave you alone, so you can just be happy being happy, instead of feeling like you have to feel down.

19. Do you get annoyed when people say you sound like Kate Nash?
Yes and No. It's a tough one really. I LIKE Kate Nash. I have for a very long time. However, I don't think we're that similar. I think our sound is different and people just make the comparison because we have similar accents. and hair, apparently.

20. Who is your biggest musical influence?
ooooooh! I can't answer this. There are literally too many. I always wished I'd been Debbie Harry. But I wouldn't say she was my BIGGEST influence. there are too many to say.

Mini Update

Hello Fantastic Fans,

It’s been far too long, and I can but apologise.

Recently we played Redfest. It was an excellent laugh. The boys and I were up dancing ‘til the early hours, our set was a killer and we all went home with smiles on our faces. It’s a lovely little festival and I would recommend you go there next year before it gets massive. It’s a lovely small festy. I even tried some Kangaroo burger and quite liked it.

The next day we played The Southsea Carnival. It was the first Southsea Carnival in quite a few years and we played second to last on the main stage. It was a brilliant day anyway, my very good friends Mikey (of The Silhouettes) and Lady Georgiana got engaged half way through Mikey’s set. So everyone was in a party mood already. I couldn’t believe how many people were there that I knew. My set seemed to fly by but I enjoyed it all the same. I stayed to watch Kill Kasper who killed it (the gig I mean, not Kasper). Win.

We’ve been busily recording our upcoming single “your Smile” which has been good, despite a few hiccoughs. I did sit in the studio for nearly 7 hours on Saturday consuming sugary treats, singing and chasing cats around the place. But it IS good fun and totally worth it

Speaking of cats, I managed to somehow trick mine into liking me. I’m not sure what I did but he can’t get enough cuddles at the moment. Win.

We played “Hot Ears” a gig at the Kings Theatre on Friday night for a charity called Solent Youth Action. It was a good night and hopefully lots of money was raised for the charity.

For the next couple of weeks we will be practising hard and recording some more. It’s not long until Lodestar festival and Southsea Fest and then TOUUUUR!!!!!!! Check the dates, it’s gonna be good fun!

100,000 and wishing along summer!

Hello Fantastic Fans.

Firstly I'll get the important bits out of the way: we have finished our single!!! hooray!!

There are teasers to "little yellow" available on the believe player on the page, the single is due to be released on April 5th, of course available from all good digital distributors, so save yer pennies and download it. No excuses. I personally think it sounds bloody marvellous!!!




Another thing to note is that we reached the 100,000 plays mark. This might not seem a majorly big thing in comparison to Lily Allen's 68 millions plays to date, but I think it shows a milestone has been hit. It means that my songs have been heard by thousands of people, and i'm very greatful to everyone that has listened, especially those in the last few months.



We have had some more dates added to the tour which you can see on the gigs listings on the myspace page or at http://www.leighmarystokes.co.uk/ Some more dates to be released soon as well, it's all very exciting!

In the honour of Leigh Mary Stokes tradition, I would like to take a minute to mention some friends of mine. If any of you are hankering for a new musical flavour to spin then I suggest you check out some of my top Friends. They are filled with esteemed colleagues and good old buddy's of mine. Some we have played with, some I have sung along drunkenly to, some are stable mates and some I just aspire to be as good as! (Although if anyone asks, i'm the bees knees) I think the best bit about the music game is meeting new people, making new friends and ultimately hearing new music which brings you that fuzzy warm feeling that cake does... so yeah, check them out if you fancy!



Another important thing I wanted to mention is that I am still harbouring a terrible Twitter addiction. I love it. I literally cannot get enough of it,except that on perusing through the people on there I came upon a cat called Keef (like my kitty) which I thought was amusing for a short while until I noticed he had more Twitter Followers than me!! shocking! he wasn't even typing his own tweets!Anyway, so please follow me on www.twitter.com/leighmarystokes and I will update you with round-the-clock information about what is happening in my head.



I didn't get my banana shoes! but I did get a new dress recently, which turned out to be a less than great thing, as my photographer friend snapped me wearing it at the Express Fm studios where I appeared as a guest on The Me & Perrin, You & Everyone We Know Show. When I say I appeared, I mean I popped in for a chat and a cup of tea with the presenters and general riff-raff that they call regulars ;) Anyway, the picture wasn't great but as THREE TIMES NOW Kate Nash has out-done me I thought i'd register it here first. Three times she has worn a dress I own and been in some magazine, so, Nash, this one's mine. Do Not Buy.

I've had this friggin' cold for nearly a month now, and today I have a bright red snotty nose, which is awful in particular because it means I can't go on chatroulette. Anyone not seen it? it's hilarious, actually hilarious. But I refuse to go on it looking like Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. So it will have to wait. It's actually very sore and as I have spent money on 2 lots of sunglasses and sundresses recently on account of being too hot and blinded by the beautiful Southsea Sun, I would appreciate this winter flu buggering off and being replaced with a cool sunkissed glow...



I bought some studio equipment last week, and have spent all week recording some demo tracks of new songs, and lots of little recordings of myself doing various covers. Over the coming months there will be ways for you to get your hands on these as well as some other LMS goodies, so make sure you keep checking the blog and i'll keep you posted.

Eliza Doolittle, FA Cup, Reviews etc

Hello Fantastic Fans,I haven't written in a while, but it's almost a good thing because I have become the worlds biggest twitter addict. Ever. All I Seem to do is tweet! And nothing important either just random notes about what i've been listening to/eating/watching. I am a tweet-a-holic. So we played at the Cellars recently with Eliza Doolittle. For those of you that have been paying attention, we supported her in late 2008 before we were a full band properly and it was a lovely gig, (the same gig included Doll & Her Kicks, Beans on Toast and various other bands that we've been bumping into around the circuit.. it's all very inbred don'tcherknow.)Her song Rollerblades was penned as one of my favourite songs of all time anyway, As anyone that downloaded my Spotify Playlist for 2009 would know. It was the first track. (Or possibly 2nd, sorry Eliza, I think Magic kids snuck in before you... still an awesome song though) so we were happy to be playing with what we were already aware was a huge a talent. It's nice doing gigs where you know exactly what you are going to get and in this case it was a lovely little set of soulful pop songs. Almost Hawaiian sounding, cheery and wonderful. Her band were great too.
First on was a lovely girl called Natalie Hall. We were talking about the set among ourselves and everyone agreed Disney should sign her right up because she was very Hannah Montana, but actually someone pointed out (Luke Ferre, he loves it) that she was actually more like Miley Cyrus. Just well crafted, gentle pop songs. Everyone enjoyed her set, and her band were spot on. www.myspace.com/nataliehall
Then we played, we mixed up the set a bit which slightly offended my OCD, and Gareth the barman had already mentioned my dress made me look like a toilet roll cover, so I was less than enthusiastic to play but then again as it was the first gig of the year I had almost forgotten what it was like to play live. As soon as I got on stage I was loving it. Despite a couple of hiccoughs in the first song mostly due to my soar throat as I was a naughty girl and may have gone out drinking and dancing to "Lucifers gold" the night before, the set went really well.To end the set - for the first time ever - the band left the stage and I played "I wanna marry Tom Vek" on my own, which people seemed to like. I really enjoyed myself and need to mention thanks to Iain @ Stiff Promotions for setting the whole thing up - always a good time. We sold lots and lots of CD's and had a nice little dance to Eliza.
Eliza's set was lovely as I mentioned before and if any of you haven't heard/seen her I'd check her out at www.myspace.com/elizadoolittle she's rather cute, and our friend Luke Ferre made the evening with a rather embarrassing proclaimation of love for her. She was flattered. I giggled. Fun times.
To be honest, the most exciting thing about the gig was being sat on the train the next day, flicking through the football pages at the back of The News - quick interjection to say did anyone watch the Southampton V Portsmouth match? Epic. I was quite hungover and I was feeling all sad because I thought we would lose and then BAM. 4 - 1. Gutted Southampton. (I'm fairly certain I can say this, because, although I have nothing against Southampton, I am a Pompey fan, and at some point that was going to come out, wasn't it? well it has now. Play Up Pompey!!!)
Anyway I was reading the news and I got a text saying "you're in the news, page 32" from an anonymous number. If this was you can you please please let me know as I have no idea who you are... Anyway, There it was, a lovely little write up of Eliza's gig. I would cut out the clipping but it would be a lot of cutting and sticking, and I spent 2 and a half hours glitter glue-ing a Valentines card the other night... that's enough arts and crafts for this week, - OH!! I also recieved my first EVER Valentines day card this year. Yes Sir-ee i felt popular. aha.so anyway here is the link to the story, check paragraph 3 for my bit:

Which obviously prompted the question from all of my fellow Portsmothian musicians "since when were you one of Portsmouth's favourite artists?" Which i thought was lovely... I love this city...!!
No but in all seriousness, that was a great review for us and I was very proud. I literally cannot wait to get on stage again though, its such an addictive rush!
We're currently booking for our next tour in April which includes a few stops on the south coast: Portsmouth, Isle of wight and Brighton, also several stops around the UK.
